My questionnaire for the title of my magazine

From my results i found that the majority found that hardsound was the best choice for a magazine. closely followed by crabcore magazine.

So my magazine will now be called Hardsound i want to have a distressed effect on the font for the front cover.

My outlined idea

My magazine will be called "Hardwaves" and is going to feature alternative/hardcore unsigned bands who need the advertising, to get more intrest in an attempt to allow more musicians to be noticed.

colour scheme will be white and blue. with a album design and posters shown on the front.
photos will be very much in your face with alot of energy and bright colours to attract the reader.

this will be completely alternative.

Unique selling point

my unique selling point is a weekly free CD and poster collection of featured bands inside the magazine some magazines do this but mine will be different as it promises to feature underground bands. this is what makes my mag different and appeals to a completely different audience, therefore allowing my magazine to sell something that is currently not available.

My results have shown that most people i asked to do the survey liked magazines such as Kerrang and Rock sound and read them once every now and again, genres that feature in this eg. Rock Metal and pop punk, bands that are typical to feature include A day to remember, Bring me the horizon, Enter shikari etc.

Download chart

I dont believe the download chart gives my genre justice, the bands i would feature in my band would not be in the chart. the majority of hardcore bands believe in actually doing it for the music not for the benefit of earning more money. bands faetured in my magazine will be underground bands.

as you can see from this image the charts is dominated by mainstream pop, and does not give "better" bands justice.

Band images

This is a poster marketed for the band "A day to remember" they used a similar design for there 3rd album for easier recognition as there fame grew. what i like about this design is everything appears to be reaching out or chasing you, the image is low key aswell which really emphasizes the pink font making us focus on the name of the band. also is very "in you face" hinting at the bands genre of hardcore punk.

This is a live photo of Bring me the horizons vocalist Oli Sykes. its a low angle shot making him seem powerful and we all know when the vocalist says something live we most likely do it, pictured just at the right moment aswell, as he screams into the microphone.

This is rise against's 5th album entitled appeal to reason. this is my favorite album cover ive seen, its very controversial with the character in the gas mask holding a gun to his head, and especially the rifle in the top left surrounded by flowers, all the colors are danger colors reds yellow and black.

IPC magazines

As my producer and distributor of my own music magazine i have chosen IPC due to one factor which is they already produce alot of successful products such as NME (pictured above) they have high sales figures and are unique in a way that they can produce any type of music and also proves my own brand would sell as they do feature rock bands and hardcore bands.

kerrang is the market-leading music weekly with a devoted audience of rock fans driving sales of 60,289 this is due to a large fanbase for this genre of music and also providing a TV channel and a radio station.


I am not even attempting to match these sales as it wouldnt match the criteria of my magazine as i would like to keep it away from other corporate magazines.

annotations of a well known magazine

This is Rock Sound magazine it is a well established product in rock magazine.
it uses bright colours to draw attention to the product, also using well known people on the front cover attracts an audience from even more people, it helps that the main focus is Rou reynolds lead singer from Enter Shikari, followed by Sam Carter from Architects mixing two genres but staying within the boundary's of rock.

This example sticks to one theme using red, blue yellow and white often used with a paint type splatter behind the text, at the top of the magazine we can see another marketing technique which says "FREE CD+MASSIVE PARAMORE+BIFFY POSTERS!"

Used down the right hand side we see sub headings revealing which bands are featured in this edition all the bands mentioned are well known established rock bands and appeal to a wide audience.

My first practice mag

only had a limited amount of time to complete this as i missed the first (lesson whoops) but anyways here it is

This is my first attempt at a magazine like this, i used a font which i think stands out very well and is easy to identify with this brand as it is very unique, i didnt use a slogan as i believe it looks a little unprofessional

My model is shot in a medium close up and is looking directly at the camera, my anchor stroy i believe could be alot better but i was rushing to get this done, as i missed my first lesson due to illness

My subheadings i think could also be better, by adding more colour to the sub headings and more thought through headings

straplines, i tried to add these into this practice mag, which i dont think is my best work my actual piece will look alot more professional
